How a site backup works
Why do you need a backup? To return to the proven and reliable version of the site in case of force majeure. The list of force majeure cases includes any situations in which the project fails: virus infection, hacking, unsuccessful update, CMS failure... The backup protects the data and allows you to quickly and without unnecessary work return the working version of the web portal. Without reserves, you risk losing your site every day with all developments, data and visitor accounts.
All information about your website (database, settings files, etc.) is stored on the server of the hosting provider. By backing up your site, you will move them to another location. Your computer, a remote server from another provider, may even act as a file sharing or cloud storage backup server. If the main files of the site are somehow damaged, you will restore the working version from the backup.
Usually they store several backups of the site's data, but several at once - for example, backups for the last month. Sometimes problems with the portal are not immediately identified, and the restoration of yesterday's copy will not help the owner in any way. Thus, storing monthly or even quarterly copies will not waste disk space.
Most viruses do not work immediately. Days or even weeks can pass from the moment of infection to the destruction of files. Therefore, the site administrator will have to do a lot of work, looking for a "clean", undamaged copy.
